What's in a name?

Names of pets from Spot to Quasi-more-toes(a 6-toed cat), have stories behind them. When I got my ferret Marcus the first name that came to mind after careful observation was Nipper, now that's a cruel and unfair label to give him so I came up with Marcus... a little more subtle and he's outgrown most of his nipping habits anyway.
I'm sure there are stories behind lots of the names you have given your pets, let's share some here :)

When we first got my dog I was 5 or 6 years old. At the time one of my favorite stuffed animals was a little tiger called Ty (before a company by the same name became famous for beanie babies). The guidelines my parents gave me for naming him was it couldn't start with the same letter/sound as any major commands, and it couldn't be a common name. I ended up choosing Ty, so my dog is named after a stuffed animal. :-)

I had this one dog who broke his leg. So I did this painting, sort of a graphic, of this dragonlike, but sort of him too, creature with one leg bent in the wrong direction. I did it in a kind of chinese style...with characters and the whole bit. His name was Spanky McFarlen (cause he was fat and cute when he was a puppy). I called the painting , "Broken Dragon".

Anyway, after he died, I got another dog, who is pictured here in the forums, that sort of looks like him. They had similar personalities as well. So I named him Long-Long (pronounced loong loong)...which in Chinese means "dragon-like" or "like a dragon". It was a way to acknowledge the similarities.

When I got my dog Shamrock, it was St.Patrick Day, so my mom(I was only five at the time.) wanted to name our pet something that was not too original. I gave the name Sandy, a good name for a dog, but no that was too original. A day after we got our unnamed dog, we named her Shamrock, after the day we got her, St.Patrick Day.
Patch:my cat. Was named after the one patch on his neck.
Other story's of other people's pets I want too, please!!

Hmm, my puppy who died recently (from liver failure and a congenital heart condition) was named Pippin because it seemed real pansy-like and he was really scrawny and err... poofy, lol. I don't know how to explain. My pup now is called Caoimhe but there's not really a story behind that... I mostly just pick names I like.

I had a rabbit named Murphy who was named after Cillian Murphy, a chinchilla named Hendrix after Jimi Hendrix and a chinny named Winston after John (Winston) Lennon but other than that, my pets haven't really had stories behind their names.

Zena, my older feline room-mate whose name is part of my SU identify, came from the Humane Society when she was a year old. They had her named Vanna. I thought no way is this cat being branded a prissy missy letter turner. So she became Zena, a mispelling of Xena, and she is a warrior princess.

I was going to name my 2nd fur person roommate Gabrielle, after Xena's sidekick but I knew people would call her Gabby. So I thought how about Iggy (after Iggy Pop) but my bfriend complained too much. So I said how about Ziggy which he liked better and then I added Stardust to it in acknowledgment of being a fan of David Bowie's music (ZS and the Spiders from Mars was my favourite record in high school). And now Ziggy Stardust acts as my SU avatar.

I have 4 cats - one of which is called Mr Moose - because when he was born he was real big and all head - he was huge against his brothers and sisters - he had a tiny body and tail and bright pink eyes and pure white - he looked so odd and ugly. All the other kittens got homes but no one wanted Moose so we kept him. He is now nearly 5 years old - weight approx 7 kg all muscle and a prize winner, He has beautiful sapphire eyes and a slight golden tinge to his coat with a auburn tail.

I've got 9 cats (you can see them on my blog)... sometimes it take a while to find the right name, and sometimes their name will change over time. I have one fellow who came to me as a kitten in such a dramatic and unlikely way, that it seemed like he was really meant to be with me. He was originally named God's Will, or Will. But over the years his nave evolved into Kitty Boo, and then just plain Boo.

Another one started out named Blessing, because she was so kind to some orphaned kittens in the house. But over time she has wound up being called Gamma.

Actually, I am that way too, as my own name has been legally changed 3 times so far in this life!
